Why Concentrated Juices Are a More Sustainable Alternative
Sustainability plays an increasing role in the food and beverage industry. Hospitality, catering and healthcare institutions are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint, without compromising on quality and convenience. One of the most efficient solutions in this area is to use concentrated juices instead of ready-to-drink drinks.
At Oranka, we are committed to more sustainable beverage solutions. But why are concentrates actually a more eco-friendly alternative? Let ‘s look at the facts.
1. Less Packaging Waste, Greater Efficiency
Producing ready-made juices requires large amounts of packaging material. Think plastic bottles, cardboard packs or glass bottles. This not only creates a lot of waste, but also additional transport costs and storage space.
- Concentrates drastically reduce packaging waste. For example, a 1-litre bottle of Oranka 1+9 fruit juice concentrate yields 10 litres of finished product. Compared to ready-to-use litre packs , this saves up to 90% in packaging material.
- For post-mix systems, such as our Bag-in-Box 1+5 and 1+6 concentrates, the impact is even greater. One 5L Bag-in-Box replaces up to 30 individual litre packs, significantly reducing waste.
2. Less transport, less carbon emissions
Transport is a big factor in CO₂ emissions from the food industry. The larger the volume to be transported, the more fuel is consumed.
- Concentrates significantly reduce transport volume. As water is extracted from the juice, the product becomes 6x smaller than ready-to-drink juice. This means fewer trucks are needed and therefore less CO₂ is emitted.
- In addition, Oranka’s concentrated juices can be stored outside refrigeration for up to 18 months. This reduces energy consumption for refrigerated transport and storage.
3. Less Storage, More Usability
Besides environmental benefits , concentrates also offer practical advantages for catering and hospitality:
- Less storage space needed: Whereas ready-made juices take up a lot of space in cold rooms, concentrates can be stored at room temperature. This saves storage capacity and makes stock management easier.
- Fewer operations: Systems such as post-mix dispensers allow staff to quickly prepare large quantities of juice prepare large quantities of juice without opening bottles or packs and throwing them away.
- Longer shelf life: As concentrates have a longer shelf life, there is less wastage, reducing both costs and waste.
